Yes, the only explanation is that somewhere in a configuration file left from v3 it's specified the path to the wallet.dat as the root of the data folder so the wallet knows from where to load it.

I don't understand why everyone doesn't just create a v3 backup and store it somewhere safe. Then uninstall the complete v3 version and then perform a clean v4 installation (see video).
